ART DEPARTMENT

The art department at Grosse Pointe South High School is a strong and unique department. Being one of the largest high school art departments in the state, it offers a wide range of courses that include a variety of both 2 and 3 dimensional media. A student may enroll in a course to fulfill the fine arts graduation requirement or may enroll in many courses during their four year high school program and graduate with a portfolio of art work from one or several areas.

The department consists of 4 full time staff members and 2 part time teachers.

This local gallery and framing shop hosted an exhibition for students at South High. Twenty five art students had work framed and on display for three weeks. An opening Reception was held in April for students, parents, and community art patrons. A cash award was given to one student in the five art categories of drawing, painting, photography, mixed media, and graphic design. The winners are pictured above.

                ART FEST

On May 6-8, the art department held the annual ART FEST exhibition of student art work.  This 16th Annual Art Fest was sponsored by the Art Department and the Mother's Club. Over two hundred pieces of  work were on display in Cleminson Hall. An opening reception was held during the evening of May 6 for students, parents, art patrons, and alumni.

Many awards were presented to students for individual pieces of art work. Former students, parents, professional artists, and arts organizations generously donated honors and cash awards to our art students in all media categories.

ART FEST '97 was an outstanding exhibition that showcases the excellent work of our fine staff and talented students. The continued and excellent support of the South High's Mother's Club made possible the awards ceremony, selling of the art works, and the operation of the gallery during show dates.
