Ellen J. Bowen Director of Choral Music and
Music Theater Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan
From 1986 to the present, Ellen has been
the director of four choirs at Grosse Pointe South High School,
Michigan, including the nationally known Pointe Singers Show and A
cappela ensemble . Previously she was Professor of Music and
Music Theater at Macomb College and Choir Director for Chippewa
Valley High School. Before returning to college to finish her
teaching degree and Masters she conducted pits for Equity road show
musicals, Gypsy, Hello Dolly, and Camelot and others
and was a professional performer and director of the youth show
group in Carmel, Indiana, The Generators, for the Governor of
Indiana.
In 2004 the South production of She Loves Me
was awarded Main Stage at the International Thespian Festival and
was directed by the same Bowen, Haines, Johnson, Vicary, Hupp team
who have also combined their artistic talents in Grosse Pointe
South’s Anything Goes, Into the Woods, West Side Story”
,Beauty and the Beast, and 2008 year’s musical Les
Miserables. Les Miserables was just recognized by USA Today
Magazine as the top musical in the State of Michigan.
Ellen’s choirs have won three Showstopper Grand
Championships as well as serving as the Honor Choir in New York in
2002 and 2005 and again at Disney in March 2007. The Pointe Singers
have been featured performers with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
for over 50 performances including the 2007 and 2008 Home for the
Holiday’s concert..You may hear Ellen’s choirs at Orchestra Hall on
December 18, 19, 20 and 21. Most recently the choirs have
performed with the Professional Detroit Chamber Winds throughout the
Detroit Metropolitan area. They have performed throughout, Italy,
Germany, Austria and in Prague. In February of 2008 Ellen’s Grosse
Pointe South choirs traveled to Spain where they sang in Barcelona,
Madrid, Segovia, and Valencia. This year they will again travel to
New York to sing at the United Nations and sing for the United
Nations School. Professionally the Pointe Singers have been
featured at many ACDA, MENC, and MSVMA conventions.
Ellen Bowen was the Michigan State chair for
American Choral Directors Association Show and Music Theater
Division and has authored articles in the state magazine Belle Voce
for choral Directors on Music Theater. Ellen is a judge for
district, state and National competitions and most recently judged
the West Virginia State Finals for Show choir. She has degrees from
Columbia College, Ball State University, Oakland University, Butler
University and a certificate in music technology from the University
of Michigan. She has also taken courses at Penn State, Wayne State
and Michigan State Universities.
Ellen grew up in Plymouth, Indiana where she
maintains a summer home on Pretty Lake, Indiana. In the winter she
lives in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan and is the proud parent of two
beautiful and successful daughters, Traci, 40, from Indianapolis
and Amy, 36, from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Ellen is the proud
grandmother of Quintin Tabor Ruminski, age 7; Evan Waring
Bowser,age 6; Deagan Merritt Ruminski, 5.
