Director of Bands
Dan White earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Wayne State University in
1988. As an undergraduate, he was principal saxophonist with the Wayne State
University Symphony Band and lead alto saxophonist with the Wayne Jazz Lab band.
With the Symphony Band, Mr. White was a featured soloist and performed a concert
tour of Germany and Austria, and at national and international music education
conventions in Los Angeles and Boston. He studied saxophone performance at Wayne
with Jose' Mallare and Earl Deforest, and conducting with Dr. Joseph Labuta and
Harold Arnoldi. Mr. White began his teaching career in the Lincoln Park Public
Schools, where he directed elementary and middle school level bands for six
years. While teaching in Lincoln Park, Mr. White was the recipient of the
National PTA Distinguished Service Award in 1992. After joining the Grosse
Pointe Public School System in 1995, he taught instrumental music at Richard and
Maire Elementary Schools and Parcells and Pierce middle schools. Now at Grosse
Pointe South High School, Mr. White directs the Concert, Symphony, Pep and Jazz
Bands.
In addition he teaches Music Theory, Music Appreciation, Music Technology, and Jazz Lab
classes. He is a member of MSBOA and MENC, and continues to perform
professionally with area jazz, popular, and concert ensembles.
